State-building 2.0: China, Tibet, and the rise of new control technologies

There is a new political system in the making

in China and we do not know how to interpret the information coming from China. What kind and how new «soft» intimidation and control techniques are widely used in occupied Tibet today. And why the «body count» information does not work anymore in reporting of the abuses. Professor Robert Barnett of Columbia University, one of the world’s foremost experts on today’s Tibet, is to lecture on this subject. Barnett is critical of what he refers to as «Body count» in the western media, and ask whether it is true that repression in Tibet necessarily mean abuse and mistreatment. He does not question that the abuse takes place in Tibet, but believes the biggest challenge to China’s rule in Tibet is about control and «Group liability» – control right down to each individual household. Journalist Øystein Rakkenes and China expert Harald Bøckmann are to comment on and discuss Barnetts lecture. The seminar is organised by The Norwegian Tibet Committee in cooperation with Museum of Cultural History, University of Oslo. Time: Saturday,

7. November 2015, at 14.00. Place: Litteraturhuset, Oslo. Show your interest for the seminar on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/events/1651742711750081/ The seminar is supported by Fritt Ord.

Seminar om ikke-vold

international-day-of-nonviolence
